2013 has come to a close. There were many notable happenings in the world of juggling that transpired this past year. Like every year, records were broken, memorable festivals took place, and some jugglers left their mark in history. 2013 also saw some interesting juggling coverage in the media, as well as suffered a few losses. Let’s take a look back at this past year in juggling.
For many jugglers, attending juggling festivals around the world were among their yearly highlights. The International Jugglers’ Association held its 66th annual festival in Bowling Green, OH. This was a notable location, as it marked a return to a college campus setting for the festival. The event saw Kyle Driggs take the gold medal in the individuals competition with a rings and umbrella routine, the four person Japanese act The Pastels take gold in teams, and Ashley Ellis took first place in Juniors with a baton routine. Thomas Dietz made his return to the juggling festival scene by appearing as one of the special guests, which also included Jenton the Gentleman Juggler, Markus Furtner, Steven Ragatz, Jonglissimo, and Jay Gilligan.
The second Mexico IRC took place at the Periplo International Circus Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico and featured a wide array of colorful performers. Hooper and winner of the first IRC Mexico, Fernanda Sumano took third place, Jorge Vilchis placed second, and Adrian “Niño” Torres took home the gold.
The European Juggling Convention held its 2013 festival in Toulouse, France. Amazing things happened at the festival, and while it was generally well received, it did unfortunately suffer from financial hardship. Next year, the EJC will make its return to Millstreet, Ireland.
After being seemingly inactive for most of the year, the World Juggling Federation emerged with a new website and announced that WJF 9 would be held in December of 2013 in its return to Las Vegas, NV. Relative new comer Jonah Botnivick-Greenhouse took home the overall championship, becoming the youngest person in WJF history to do so, at only 14 years of age, besting out Cirque du Soleil juggler Vladik Miagkostoupov. At the end of the year, the newly revitalized organization also announced the introduction of the global juggling competition initiative, the WJF Intercontinental Championship.
The online juggling world had various notable happenings in 2013. The IJA held its fourth annual video tutorial contest, which saw another successful year, as well as an unusually large number of pen spinning tutorials. Other online happenings of note included Tony Pezzo and Jay Gilligan both releasing IJA Members Only exclusive videos, and Reddit Juggling breaking the 3,000 mark in terms of members.
Several juggling videos also went viral and received attention from different websites. Jay Gilligan did a TEDX lecture on the evolution of juggling that provided fascinating insight on various areas of juggling coupled with Gilligan’s trademark experimental displays of manipulation. Video of The Pastels winning routine from the 2013 IJA festival also went viral, appearing on websites and gathering over 200,000 views in just a few months.
Like it does most years, juggling had several brushes with the mainstream press in 2013. During the summer, Ripley’s Believe it or Not partnered with the IJA to celebrate World Juggling Day. In television, David Ferman appeared as a contestant on America’s Got Talent doing various danger juggling routines. Though he did not make it to the finals, Ferman did get a fair amount of television time.
All of the major attention that juggling got in the media, however, was dwarfed by one major phenomenon in 2013 juggling coverage: combat juggling.
For whatever reason, footage of the Major League Combat finals began appearing on various websites with accompanying articles. Shortly thereafter, not only did the MLC video go viral, but the story itself seemed to go viral, with multiple news sources amazed that such a thing actually existed. The coverage escalated to such a degree, that it eventually ended up in its own segment on the Colbert Report. Though the coverage became extensive, much of it was less than flattering to the juggling community. In a scene that generally embraces creativity and atypical activities, it is sometimes easy to forget that what seems like a normal game to jugglers, is easily misunderstood and subject to ridicule by those outside the know.
Numerous juggling records were broken in 2013 as well. Emil Dahl did the seemingly impossible when he became the first person in recorded history to flash nine clubs. Numbers juggling beast Alex Barron continued his reign of numbers supremacy by landing an fdb97531 to a qualify, setting a new record in 13 balls with 15 catches (breaking his own previous record), and by setting a new ten ball record in the wimpy pattern with 30 catches to a clean collect, surpassing David Ferman’s 2011 record of 26 catches.
In passing records, last year’s IJA teams champions Daniel Ledel and Dominik Harant teamed up with Jonglissimo’s Christoph and Manuel Mitasch in various combinations to set new records in three person 18 club passing, 13 club two person passing, and two person ring passing in 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17 rings. Daniel and Dominik also met up with Florian Canaval to set new records in three person 15, 16, and 17 club passing. No stranger to breaking passing records, Doug Sayers partnered with Ben Thompson to set new passing records in 16 and 17 ball passing, as well as getting 15 catches of 14 clubs. Dan Wood and David Leahy also pushed the limits by setting new ball passing records in 19 and 20 balls.
October of 2013 was a dark month for the juggling community, as multiple losses seemed to occurred nearly all at once.
That month, Circus Harmony’s Reggie Moore tragically died in an automobile accident. IJA festival goers may recall seeing the young performer at the 2012 IJA festival, where he performed in the Planting the Juggling Seed show and appeared on the Renegade stage. Seen as a gentle giant and promising young entertainer, Moore was only 21 years of age.
Variety show performer Walter Houc passed away in October as well. A professional performer for most of his life, Houc was a member of the long running and highly acclaimed juggling and acrobatics performance group The Three Houcs. Houc retired in 1983, and had a comfortable retirement, living to 102 years of age.
Vaudevillian Kumar Pallana was another loss of 2013. An accomplished variety performer originally from India, Pallana was especially known for his plate spinning abilities. He was also a successful screen actor and businessman. The world lost Pallana on October 10th, 2013 at the age of 94.
Midway through the month, news broke that Dube Juggling was being forced out of its New York, NY store location, after operating at that spot for the past 23 years. This caused the company not only to have to leave their long running showroom space behind, but also to have to put the entirety of their inventory and equipment into storage, suspending their overall operations indefinitely. As of this writing, there is no word as to what the future holds for the popular juggling equipment company.
Also in October, Kaskade magazine abruptly announced that it would be discontinued, effective immediately. Citing Editor burnout and financial hardship for its decision, the European publication ran for 112 issues from September 1984 to the last quarter of 2013 before calling it quits. After the demise of JUGGLE magazine two years ago, Kaskade was likely the last internationally circulated print magazine centered on juggling. However, Kaskade did announce the release of an online archive, slated to go live sometime in 2014.
Next year will be another year of juggling records, performances, festivals, creativity, technical skill, and innovation. As far as to just what these will be exactly, the excitement is in finding out as they unfold in 2014.

2013 se ha terminado. Ocurrieron hechos muy notables en el mundo de los malabares durante el año pasado. Como cada año, se batieron récords, tuvieron lugar festivales memorables, y algunos malabaristas dejaron su marca en la historia.
También fue un año con alguna cobertura interesante en los medios, así como un año en el que se produjeron algunas pérdidas. Vamos a echar la vista hacia atrás hacia el malabarismo del año pasado.
Para muchos malabaristas, asistir a los festivales de malabares distribuidos por el mundo está entre sus momentos más destacados del año. Otros hechos online destacables fueron los vídeos exclusivos para miembros de la IJA estrenados por Tony Pezzo y Jay Gilligan; y el pase de la barrera de los 3000 miembros de Reddit Juggling.
Varios vídeos de malabares se convirtieron en virales y llamaron la atención de diferentes webs. Jay Gilligan dió una conferencia de TEDX sobre la evolución del malabarismo que propició una fascinante visión de varias áreas de los malabares, acompañada de las demostraciones experimentales de manipulación habituales de Gilligan.
